Model Lindsey Wixson really suits a tangerine lip and I love the soft make-up look of the above shot. It’s from the DSquared2 SS14 show at Milan fashion week and has a retro, tropical feel. I’m definitely partial to orange lipstick myself and alternate between bright tangerine, neon pink and rich red. I’m lucky that most colours suit me I suppose. This fresh look calls for a flawless complexion. Choose an illuminating foundation that gives good coverage. You’ll also need a great concealer for the under-eye area. Then use a highlighter on the apples of the cheeks, chin and nose to add dimension to the look and create a subtle glow.

The make-up artist has opted for a soft, warm browns across the eyes. Use a palette with three coordinating shades for ease. Use the lightest as a base across the eye and keep the centre of the eyelids quite light. Then work in the mid-tone brown to the eye sockets, concentrating on the outer side of the eye. The darkest shade can be used right by the lash line in the outer corners of the eye to soften the effect of brown eyeliner. Use a brown eyeline just on the upper lids, close the the lashes. The wide-eyed look is achieved by false lashes, but go for ones that are longer at the outer corners of the eyes. Mascara can be kept to a minimum to keep everything quite soft and demure.

The brows are really important for this look. Extra colour has been applied at the top of the natural brows in a sweeping arch shape. Then the brows have been brushed upwards. If you are using a brow pencil, use soft, short applications of colour. My personal preference is to use a brow powder or wax as these give a much more natural effect. A shimmer-free eye shadow can work quite well if you don’t have the right brow product. 

Lindsey has been blessed with the most amazing lips so any colour makes an impact on her. For the rest of us, using a striking shade like orange still makes a real statement. Make sure lips are dry and line them first to stop any colour bleeding. I personally don’t feel the need to apply lipstick with a brush, it’s just best to layer up the colour and blot between applications to make sure it goes the distance.
