Changing Habits is the company of Nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara. Cyndi is committed to spreading the word about what real food and nutrition can do for you. Cyndi’s book Changing Habits Changing Lives is just about that: helping people move to a healthier diet and one that is rich in whole foods. How does she do this? By helping you one step at a time. That’s what I’ve loved about Cyndi’s book ever since I bought it a few years ago. She doesn’t give you too many things to worry about- she just helps you slowly change certain unhealthy habits into healthier ones!

Funnily enough about a year after I bought Changing Habits Changing Lives, my mum gave me a book called “Immunity- Why Not Keep It?” which is co-authored by Cyndi!

As you sit on your beautiful and sophisticated sofa, you may think how good life can be and how clean it maybe. However, spare sometime to see the toxic junk that have placed in the corner of your basement and garage. As we all know, those small scale of wastes that you see today probably will double or can be folded greater times in the future. Think about what your future seem likely would be without having any step to dispose it out appropriately. Reflect also the possibility of having a healthy life and cleaner environment and for the next generation.

It can be estimated to approximately 1.5 million tons of toxic wastes that can be accumulated in the U.S. per year on the household alone. How much more those other sources? These hazardous wastes that you dump in the basement and garage of your home will dramatically provide higher risks to your health and environment that you can likely be facing if you continue to ignore all these.

It is then your primary responsibility to clean it up to prevent generating these possible risks that eventually will be the biggest plaque that we are going to mug. Initiate moving now before it becomes too late. Live a healthy lifestyle and be part of the global deed promoting and saving our mother earth.

There are a lot of ways in order for your environment to become safe and your health to be invulnerable to illnesses. All you have to do is reflect unto yourself and be an element of the planet which encompasses the active participation in any programs upholding and preserving the purity of the environment. There are programs being imposed that highly concern on the environmental security which in fact your biggest opportunity to contribute and help saving the world.

Here are some simple yet vivid means to thwart the immense plaque. Consider these 3 P’s:

Planning For Green

Starting from your personal things like cellphones, computers and other appliances like refrigerators and freezers which do have particles that can damage the ozone layer further producing global warming, can be properly disposed through you noble planning and actions.

Contact your local electronic dealer and ask for help in proper disposal and/or recycling of your things.

You may ask for help with the department for sanitation regarding appropriate elimination of the unused and damaged appliances and gadgets.

How about those dirty oil from engines, pesticide sprayers, and those crusty paints that bulky lurking your basement? Instead of throwing it anywhere else usually in the drainage, why not put them inside the trash bin. It can be singled out that these oil and chemicals which are thrown through drainage can spill through several miles that may contaminate our land, water which eventually ingested back to you. Imagine how this one can of chemicals facades the risk of your health?

Immediate practical means:

Giving back your used motor batteries and oil to local agencies that aims on safer waste removal.

Bring these products to local sanitation department in order to be educated on how to aptly throw these hazardous wastes.

Help cleaning up your garage and eliminating toxic wastes by giving it to local authorities or someone who knows how to dispose it.

Planting Green

One strategy would be gardening. It is a great step towards safer life, cleaner environment and eating fresh nutritious harvest. Having a backyard garden would suffice in order to meet our goal and even give benefits to you as a grower.

Immediate practical means:

Growing gaura plants and alike which eats up insects and pests without using harmful chemicals.

Avoid eating pesticide-treated harvests.

Be responsible enough on getting rid of that household toxic garbage. Ask for help if having trouble disposing it out.

Avoid using chemicals to your raised plants instead; use non-harmful materials such as the use of welcome mat.

Do not use insecticide and other derivatives since this can imperil the environment and health.

Wash thoroughly products that have fine insect-bite rather than purposefully apply chemical sprayers.

Always provide necessary needs of the plants you grow like water. You may use the water wiggler to wash off mosquitoes-laying eggs.

Putting Out Emissions

The application of fertilizers contaminate the soil thus travels a lot which eventually putting your health at risk so as with environment. Therefore, this should be stopped from employing and proceed to some environmental-safe methods:

You may use organic fertilizers since these are less threatening yet profoundly effective.

Prior to planting, test first the soil for high nitrogen content. If yes, then don’t proceed tilling the soil.

If using fertilizers preferably organic or natural type, don’t use it before rain comes because rain can speed up spillage.

Aside from that, pesticides and herbicides are absurdly consumed providing greater risks to individuals’ especially younger ones.

Immediate practical means:

Consult local sanitation department or any local authorities regarding health hazards of using conventional pesticides and ask also about safer choices.

Provide space for few weeds to grow since these can’t spoil up plants or anyone.

Visit local nursery and discuss about environmental-friendly alternatives in growing plants.

Another source for inclination of pollution and the so called Greenhouse effect would be the overuse of gas-powered mowers. This greatly contributes to the immense affliction since it burns out about millions of barrels of gas per year.

Immediate practical means:

Use lawn clippings as fertilizers by putting it inside the compost pit rather than bringing it to landfills.

Instead of using gas-powered mowers, why not try using manual push or electrically operated lawn mower. This can technically helpful in the minimization of pollution.

With the practical methods and means aforementioned, it can be forecasted that life’s ahead can be good and ultimately enjoyable without being threatened by the unwieldy consequences if not taken some measures.

The National Institutes of Health estimates that between 250,000 and 450,000 people die annually in the United States as a result of acute heart attacks prompted by arrhythmias. An arrhythmia is a disturbance in the heart’s rhythm. Research funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute has led to the development of a unique imaging system that may become instrumental in the testing and treatment of such heart arrhythmias.

The imaging technology is comprised of dual cameras. The cameras allow physicians to examine the electrochemical and metabolic properties of a heart while under changing conditions. The advantages of viewing these physiological variables at the same time will likely have a huge impact in the area of cardiac diagnosis and treatment.

Cardiac patients with a diagnosis of acute coronary disorder now have the option of being monitored at home if they are at risk for re-hospitalization through a program called Connected Cardiac Care. Patients who participate in this program monitor their vital signs daily with telemonitoring device that also transmits the data to a physician. A telemonitoring nurse reviews the data and provides intervention if necessary remotely.

A similar concept is being tested by a group of Australian scientists to encourage cardiac patients to complete their rehabilitation programs following surgery. The trial is using a cellular phone to collect and transmit data to a central computer. Nurses are then able to review the data remotely. This technology, if successful, could be used by patients who find it difficult to make frequent trips to the hospital for the six-week rehabilitation program that’s recommended after heart surgery.

Stem cell therapy is an exciting innovation in the area of heart health. The first human received cardiac stem cells at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in June 2009. The clinical trial is using patients’ own heart tissue to grow stem cells. The stem cells are then injected into the patients’ hearts in an effort to heal damaged cardiac muscle. Twenty four patients participating in this break-through study will be monitored for six months with results scheduled for release in the latter part of 2010. This technology may enable patients to heal their own injured hearts that have resulted from heart attacks.

DecodeMe, a division of Decode Genetics, this year launched a test that detects genetic variations linked to a multitude of heart-related conditions. The test, costing $195, assesses an individual’s genetic risk for conditions such as heart attacks, atrial fibrillation, strokes, and clots in blood vessels. This information could possibly allow individuals at high risk for heart disease to receive early intervention before the problem actually manifests.

There’s a vast amount of exciting innovations on the horizon of heart health technology. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. among women and men. Hopefully, these breaking diagnostic tools and treatment options will at some point change this disturbing statistic.

Certainly there is no shortage of advice on nutrition and healthy eating but with all the media hype surrounding many “health foods,” it can be hard for a woman to tell the nutrients from advertising ploys. Women are sometimes led to believe that a specific food is healthier than it really is or that they need some exotic or expensive form of certain nutrients to gain benefits.

From the advertising that says a product has “no cholesterol” it’s still can be loaded with bad fats or tons of calories. You have to read the whole label, look at all the ingredients and the portion sizes, before you know for sure just how healthy a food is. To help the women to have a healthy lifestyle, here are the six hearty foods they say for every woman needs.

Super Food # 1: Low-fat yogurt

Goal: 3 to 5 servings a week

What it does: Yogurt is good health itself and it continues to accumulate its benefits in many new and exciting ways. And not just yogurt, any fermented dairy product, including kefir, contains healthy “probiotics” – bacteria with the power to protect you in myriad ways.

Yogurt may decrease the risk of breast cancer and it can reduce problems associated with irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory digestive tract disorders, both conditions that impact women more than men. In addition to that, it can also help reduce the risk of stomach ulcers and vaginal infections.

A cup of yogurt is loaded with bone-healthy calcium, something every woman needs more of at every age. One cup of yogurt has about 448 mg of calcium, compared to just 300 for eight ounces of skim milk. Choose a low fat yogurt with live cultures, like Lactobacillus acidophilus and skip the fruit-on-the-bottom or other flavored varieties.

Super Food # 2: Fatty fish – like salmon, sardines, and mackerel

Goal: 2 to 3 servings every week

What it does: The fish has a healthy factor called omega-3 fatty acids, and specifically two types known as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).

A fatty fish not only plays a vital role in the health of the membrane of every cell in our body, it also helps protect us from a number of key health threats. Some of those threats include heart disease, stroke, hypertension, depression, joint pain, and a number of illnesses linked to inflammation, including lupus and rheumatoid arthritis and may even offer some protection against Alzheimer’s disease.

Walnuts and flaxseed oil has an omega-3 acid known as ALA – alpha-linoleic acid, that it is certainly good for women but requires a process in the body to convert it to DHA. And that conversion process can be influenced by a variety of individual factors.

The good news is there as new products supplemented with DHA such as ready-to-drink milk product and egg fortified with DHA, a certain brands of soymilk, and making a way to the market is a cereal fortified with DHA.

Super Food # 3: Beans

Goal: 3 to 4 servings every week

What it does: Beans are a good source of protein and fiber. They are among one of the healthiest things a woman can eat.

Beans and lentils in particular, have protective effects against breast cancer. Doctors also found a relationship between a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease and a higher intake of legumes. It can help lower cholesterol, while their level of a nutrient known as isoflavone can help in the regulation of hormones and may aid with PMS, perimenopause, or menopause symptoms. Lastly, it does does give a steady supply of folic acid essential to women’s pregnancy.

Super Food # 4: Tomatoes (or watermelon, red grapefruit, red navel oranges)

Goal: 3 to 5 servings each week

What it does: The powerhouse nutrient in all these fruits is lycopene. While it said to have a protective effects against prostate cancer, it has shown also it has tremendous health benefits for women as well.

Research is starting to show that lycopene may protect against breast cancer and it’s also a powerful antioxidant that can help a woman fight heart disease. It may also help keep you looking younger longer by protecting against UV damage from the sun.

Super Food # 5: Vitamin D fortified low fat milk or orange juice

Goal: At least 400 IUs of vitamin D daily

What it does: Experts say fortified foods, such as milk, are the best source of Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps reduce the risk of osteoporosis and may be vital in reducing the risk of diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and tumors of the breast, colon, and ovary. It has the potential to prevent up to one–half of all breast, colon, and ovarian cancer.

A combination of staying out of the sun (which the body uses to manufacture vitamin D) and using sunscreen, which blocks the synthesis of vitamin D, has resulted in many women hitting a dangerously low level of Vitamin D.

Super Food # 6: Berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries)

Goal: 3 to 4 servings every week

What It Does: Berries may protect your body with powerful anti-cancer nutrients known as anthocyans, which are believed to play a role in cell repair. This anthocyans may decrease the risk of several cancers, including those in the breast and gastrointestinal tract.

Berries are also high in vitamin C and folic acid, which is essential for all women in their childbearing years. And they offer powerful anti-oxidant protection, which not only protects the heart but also may protect against skin aging, from the inside out. Cranberries may help reduce the risk of urinary tract infections in women, while the nutrient, lutein found in all the berries, can help protect vision.
